The Victorian era was in its zenith in 1880 and this architectural style was used extensively at Vanderbilt. The impressive Old Gym is a beautiful example. This Victorian Gothic building was designed by Peter J. Williams. The money to build Old Gym was given by Comodore Vanderbilt’s son, William Henry. Old Gym was the original University gym remaining so until 1961 when it was renovated to house the Fine Arts Department.
